Living in a foreign country can be a great learning experience.
It can also be an eye-opener.
One hears all sorts of generalisations living in a place but when you
travel and spend a substantial amount of time in a new place, you get

S.M.I.L.E. -Its the Oscars!!!!

Everyone is talking about Slumdog Millionaire.
I haven’t seen it yet.[So please don’t write to me about its “Indian-ness ” ] What I did manage to watch is another Oscar winner “Smile Pinki”, Oscar winner in Documentary Short category ,and one I would consider a truly Indian movie…..they speak in Bhojpuri and Hindi:) .You can’t get more Indian than that, even though the director is American![But the producer is an Indian
for those who would prefer details]
This is a movie that made me smile and moved me to tears at the same time…..a feat really & for those who know me would nod their heads in consent!
The title itself includes the word ’smile’ . Yes, Smile Pinki is an incredible story and it is presented so delicately. It thoroughly deserves the Oscars[ and it had for competition another brilliant short”The Witness-From the balcony of room 306″ (amazing!) ] and I hope the Oscar-nod gets more people interested in the movie.
Awesome documentaries are made every year, and sink without a trace. It’s a tough field to work in.Yet,the power of the documentaries [if well-presented] to feelings are so immense - it’s incredible. And Smile Pinki achieves that incredible effect with effortless ease. The movie is truly a realistic fairy tale . The movie once again highlights the materialism that so engulfs us,a culture that discards the different much too readily, and we react with horror when confronted with a being from the outer edges of humanity.
But the vibrant storyline ends on a positive note, while highlighting the plight and general lack of awareness about children born with a cleft lip.The little things that we take for granted, can be a distant dream for some. But Pinki shows us that the dream can be a reality and gives us a reason to smile.
I won’t speak much more, but if you stumbled on my blog…. just go ahead and watch the movie! You would smile with Pinki. And that’s for sure.
