S.M.I.L.E. -Its the Oscars!!!!
Posted by SuperHypersonic under SuperHyperSonic
Everyone is talking about Slumdog Millionaire.
I haven’t seen it yet.[So please don’t write to me about its “Indian-ness ” ] What I did manage to watch is another Oscar winner “Smile Pinki”, Oscar winner in Documentary Short category ,and one I would consider a truly Indian movie…..they speak in Bhojpuri and Hindi:) .You can’t get more Indian than that, even though the director is American![But the producer is an Indian
for those who would prefer details]
This is a movie that made me smile and moved me to tears at the same time…..a feat really & for those who know me would nod their heads in consent!
The title itself includes the word ’smile’ . Yes, Smile Pinki is an incredible story and it is presented so delicately. It thoroughly deserves the Oscars[ and it had for competition another brilliant short”The Witness-From the balcony of room 306″ (amazing!) ] and I hope the Oscar-nod gets more people interested in the movie.
Awesome documentaries are made every year, and sink without a trace. It’s a tough field to work in.Yet,the power of the documentaries [if well-presented] to feelings are so immense - it’s incredible. And Smile Pinki achieves that incredible effect with effortless ease. The movie is truly a realistic fairy tale . The movie once again highlights the materialism that so engulfs us,a culture that discards the different much too readily, and we react with horror when confronted with a being from the outer edges of humanity.
But the vibrant storyline ends on a positive note, while highlighting the plight and general lack of awareness about children born with a cleft lip.The little things that we take for granted, can be a distant dream for some. But Pinki shows us that the dream can be a reality and gives us a reason to smile.
I won’t speak much more, but if you stumbled on my blog…. just go ahead and watch the movie! You would smile with Pinki. And that’s for sure.

P.S. Heard this from a NGO colleague:
“I found this recently, the doctor profiled in the documentary heard Pinki was sick and brought her to the hospital where she was treated for malaria and fully recovered. The hospital team donated hundreds of books to the village for a lending library and Pinki is its young librarian. At the library inauguration, they showed the film to a crowd of nearly 1,000 people from the surrounding area. Best of all, Pinki being in the movie caught the attention of local development officials who are now working on a water pump, sanitation and housing for the village. ”
:)
P.P.S. I would upload a smiling Pinki [she has a lovely smile ,by the way]but I included the Dark Knight Smile just as a reference to Heath’s win, who would never be nominated again….sigh!

Lovely post. I didn’t have much clue about Smile Pinki, but will definitely try to watch it now.
And yes! Heath totally deserved the Oscar, too bad he isn’t around anymore.
Post more often ,will u??
Hey,
nice post. Beautifully crisp.
And I liked the add-on about Heath Ledger.
I didnot know about the documentary, but I will try to find it and watch it now.
I did see Slumdog and I have been to Bombay but I think Slumdog only captures one part of it. Anyway, good post!
Will watch smile pinki. Interestingly written. Infact I was watching the oscars and realized just how many movies I missed this year. Have noted all of them and will start watching, beginning with Smile Pinki. I can’t wait!
I saw the documentary and it is soooo good!
Lovely post as usual Adi
Hey Adi,
Lovely article.
And the batman smile to indicate Heath is brilliant
I watched the docu and you are right it is really deserving of the oscar.
Lovely blog you got here!
So nice to see fans of ‘documentaries’ still around…
And yes, you can say this: “The little things that we take for granted, can be a distant dream for some” again, and again, and again…………
Keep them coming!
nice post
recently I watched Slum Dog Millionaire (well was passively persuaded by couple of blonds, a bald guy and Anil Kapoor to watch it :D) and I think it just capture one part on Indian-ness, the part that people outside wants to perceive about India. Haven’t watched Smile Pinki still trying to find it online
Nice post. Good to see the focus on documentaries. It really is a nice movie and deserved the Oscar. Slumdog on the other hand as someone wrote above, focusses only on the part of India that the people outside prefer to perceive India as.
keep writing ….
Really liked these lines , “The little things that we take for granted, can be a distant dream for some. But Pinki shows us that the dream can be a reality and gives us a reason to smile.”
