2009- Memories

Posted by SuperHypersonic under SuperHyperSonic

“(Musical)TAKE-AWAYS FROM 2009″

As we count down to the start of a new year, I thought I could write about the
things one can remember from 2009. As I had written long ago, I don’t
particularly believe in resolutions, I would much rather discuss the take-aways
from the year about to finish.
But then what shall we discuss? It has been a strange year. A year when we lost
many , many people. Most shockingly perhaps Micheal Jackson. All controversies
aside, there cannot be any denying over his immense influence over music and the
video industry in particular.
Also a year of the dreaded H1N1.It spawned a series of funny sms-es and forwards
[and hidden desires in alot of us to be back to school (specifically in Pune) to
have extended breaks :| ] but one can’t ignore the huge toll it took across the
world.
Or Mr.Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize,or the shocking video of the
shooting of Neda Agha-Soltan.
There could be no end to topics I could discuss.
And then I found myself humming. A Hindi song! And I realized after a long time
there has been a lot of poetry in our [film] music this year.
So I decided to talk about music from Hindi cinema ,about artists behing those
creations. About music I liked.Because music finds its way into the secret places of the soul.
So here goes:

1.Piyush Mishra: The genius behind the OST of Gulaal Mr.Piyush Mishra, what a
man!Writer,singer,composer,actor….and sheer genius!And what a fantastic
soundtrack indeed.I absolutely cannot pick just a song from the tremendous
soundtrack of Gulaal. There is the brilliant “DUniya” ,where he has picked a line
from a Sahir Ludhianvi number and turned it into his own, poetically and oh so
refreshingly. He has paid homage to poets of yore and through the cascading
lyrics, woven sheer magic.Or the haunting ‘Aisi Sazaa’ and the lovely “‘Aarambh
hai prachand” ….poetry is back in our songs and how! The song vividly
celebrates the color red, paints a lively picture and showcases brilliant use of
Hindi and features Mishra’s own voice.
And ofcourse one cannot leave out “Ranaji”.A path-breaking mujra that talks about
current affairs! There is pure poetry and wit on display here. Mr.Mishra here’s
looking forward to many more melodious gems from you in 2010!
** those who haven’t watched Gulaal , you must! Topnotch performance from Kay Kay
[as always] and a brilliant ensemble cast.
