2009- Memories

“(Musical)TAKE-AWAYS FROM 2009″

As we count down to the start of a new year, I thought I could write about the
things one can remember from 2009. As I had written long ago, I don’t
particularly believe in resolutions, I would much rather discuss the take-aways
from the year about to finish.
But then what shall we discuss? It has been a strange year. A year when we lost
many , many people. Most shockingly perhaps Micheal Jackson. All controversies
aside, there cannot be any denying over his immense influence over music and the
video industry in particular.
Also a year of the dreaded H1N1.It spawned a series of funny sms-es and forwards
[and hidden desires in alot of us to be back to school (specifically in Pune) to
have extended breaks :| ] but one can’t ignore the huge toll it took across the
world.
Or Mr.Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize,or the shocking video of the
shooting of Neda Agha-Soltan.
There could be no end to topics I could discuss.
And then I found myself humming. A Hindi song! And I realized after a long time
there has been a lot of poetry in our [film] music this year.
So I decided to talk about music from Hindi cinema ,about artists behing those
creations. About music I liked.Because music finds its way into the secret places of the soul.
So here goes:

1.Piyush Mishra: The genius behind the OST of Gulaal Mr.Piyush Mishra, what a
man!Writer,singer,composer,actor….and sheer genius!And what a fantastic
soundtrack indeed.I absolutely cannot pick just a song from the tremendous
soundtrack of Gulaal. There is the brilliant “DUniya” ,where he has picked a line
from a Sahir Ludhianvi number and turned it into his own, poetically and oh so
refreshingly. He has paid homage to poets of yore and through the cascading
lyrics, woven sheer magic.Or the haunting ‘Aisi Sazaa’ and the lovely “‘Aarambh
hai prachand” ….poetry is back in our songs and how! The song vividly
celebrates the color red, paints a lively picture and showcases brilliant use of
Hindi and features Mishra’s own voice.
And ofcourse one cannot leave out “Ranaji”.A path-breaking mujra that talks about
current affairs! There is pure poetry and wit on display here. Mr.Mishra here’s
looking forward to many more melodious gems from you in 2010!
** those who haven’t watched Gulaal , you must! Topnotch performance from Kay Kay
[as always] and a brilliant ensemble cast.

2.Kaminey : I never,absolutely ever use swear words.Or inappropriate language.
This song made me realize the word Kaminey can be so lyrical and not inappropriate at all.
Ever since “Baawra Mann” from Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi , I hadn’t heard a song
with equivalent brilliant, philosophical poetry. And then I heard the title track from Kaminey [a brilliant movie as well]
Written by GulzaarSaab and composed and sung by Vishal Bhardwaj himself.
Enough said :)
I cannot help but quote :
“Kabhi zindagi se maanga,
pinjre mein chaand la do,
Kabhi laanten deke,
kaha aasmaa pe taango”

There is phenomenal poetry at display here. The words paint a picture. Here’s a
song that speaks of life and how unfair it can be, of heartbreak and yet it is
brimming with hope. The music and Vishal’s baritone builds up a brilliant
crescendo. In my opinion it is a song right up there, with one of the best of all
times.I know “Dhan te nan” is perhaps a more ‘popular’ number but ‘Kaminey’ is in
another dimension. One could never have thought of such a vivid, poetic use of the
word kaminey and for that alone the song is perennial.
Magic, pure magic.

3.Masakali: A dove. A pretty girl dancing with the dove. This had all the
trappings of a kabootar ja ja moment in our bollywood:P But then there were
Prasoon Joshi & A.R. Rahman onboard to save the day. And how! Using the dove as a
metaphor,to draw parallels with life. I love the fact that Prasoon Joshi prefers
being a poet first rather than being an advertiser else we might not have had the
privilege of having such gems as Masakali.
Sample this:
“Tujhe kya gam tera rishta,
Gagan ki baansuri se hai,
Pawan ki guftugu se hai,
Sooraj ki roshni se hai”

Beautiful!
There is an unusal charm in the song, an unbridled happiness and joy. The words
are poetical, and contagiously mesmerising. And not to forget Mohit Chauhan for his
silky[pun totally unintended :P ],sleepy drawl. Delhi 6 had a stellar OST but
Masakali for its sheer exuberance stands out.

So there it is!My list may have just three mentions but the first point infact
had the entire soundtrack of Gulaal :) It was a good year for poetry and music and may that continue.

I wish you all a happy 2010. Stay happy, smile alot, laugh often ,love more ,hurt less, respect people, cherish plants & animals and preserve the environment.
Let harmony prevail :)

    Aditi!

Nice to see mention of “Gulaal” Refined tastes indeed. :)
And I totally agree that Kaminey is far better a song than Dhantenan . It is hauntingly amazing.
As for Delhi 6 I prefer Rehnaa Tu over Masakali :)
Wish you a super 2010 girl with loads of success, love and happiness :)

  2. Ayush |

Innovative post. You had to spot poetry. I found it surprising that you didnot mention Dev D but maybe you haven’t heard it if I am right.
Nice to see “Gulaal” in the list. We need people like Piyush Mishra. Sheer genius indeed.

And I loved your last few lines “Stay happy, smile alot, laugh often ,love more ,hurt less, respect people, cherish plants & animals and preserve the environment.”

    Nice indeed .
Wish you a great new year as well, a year of joy, success and happiness :)

    Regards

    Ayush

*oops, not ‘your’ last few lines :| but the article’s last few lines :)

  4. Nidhi |

I completely agree with everything you say here. I was smiling to myself as I read this post since each and every song you mentioned here is a fav to me too and has also been on my phone apart from being on my laptop for me to be able to listen to whenever I want.

Infact reading this post I went Whoa!! She’s speaking (writing) my mind! Are you my doppelganger or what? Lol!

Also, I too absolutely never - without exception - use swear words or inappropriate language.. but I am in love with the song Kaminey. The word kaminey gets transformed into a sweet tease in this song, and it is difficult to imaging a better word to express the emotions this song does.

Gulaal’s OST has been on my phone too.. all of them! And masakali is just so cute. (Btw, I liked Delhi 6! I know noone else did :) )

    Here’s to a 2010 full of awesomeness! :)

    Love,
    Nidhi

    Hey,
stumbled on your blog and absolutely loved it!
Beautiful choice of topics. never predictable , I saw a few pages. Nice nice :)
Loved the choice of songs tho’ how come ‘Iktaara’ is missing from Wake up Sid” I quite liked it :P But it is your list and its great :) Kaminey is definitely the song of the decade but am sure the awards will choose a more foot tapping number :| Anyway lovely list and yes loved the closing lines to wish the readers .

Wishing you a great new year too and a year of lots of posts ;) and success :D

You’ve a regular visitor to this blog from now .

  6. Kajal Mehra |

You know as I read this post, I suddenly love Duniya Gol Hai more.
Only you could include plants and animals in your new year wish. And also the environment.
Only you would never swear,no matter what .
And only you perhaps would remember to talk about Gulaal at the end of a year.
What a OST indeed! Absolutely loved all the songs .
Tho’ I am split between ‘Pehli Baar ‘ (another M.Chauhan number )and Kaminey :|
:) But yes Gulzaar and V.Bhardwaj together is pure magic!

    Lovely post.
Have a lovely 2010 with all that you desire :)

You remember Adi, you often told me that when you write you are not looking for compliments or a mere ‘nice’ , awesome’ etc as comments. You said you wanted to know opinions on style of writing and to realize fiction and to comment on structure ,style of the article etc :)

I think I could be a very honest commentor here as ofcourse I have no clue about the music you are talking about but I can comment on your style of writing :)

1.Positivity : First, I like the positive tone of all your pieces, more so here. “As we count down to the start of a new year….” You focus on ‘Start’ and not ‘End’ A very tiny point to notice but it is a tone, an observation and positive is always better .

2.Build-up : The piece gradually builds up from a very brief summary to the focal point of music. Nicely done.

3.Language: Choice of statements make or break a piece and here your choices have conveyed the point very precisely and effectively.
Like mentioning Neda Agha-Soltan’s shooting. One line but powerful indeed.
Also , why music?”Because music finds its way into the secret places of the soul” Very beautiful.

4.The Finish: This seems to be a favorite with many people reading above comments. Here I also see fiction merging with fact :) as your love for environment, plants is visible. But maybe also because you are directly wishing the readers. So it is infact not fiction . But a very nicely written wish.Unique and very you.

Somewhere in between there should be a review of “music” you chose,as I am crippled due to language :) but maybe someone else will take that up. Someone should!

In all a beautifully written piece. How do you even manage the time is beyond me :)
Keep writing more. And have a wonderful, happy and perfectly successful new year!

    Hugs and kisses!!!!

    Marina

    Good one Aditi :)

Its always good to sum up the positives :)
